Can I register my child for an older age group?
No. Children can only participate in those camps (or apprenticeships) designed for their age group. There are no exceptions. This ensures the best possible academic and social environment for all campers. Children should be registered based on the grade they will be in next school year (Fall 2018).
What should I do if my child has special needs?
Parents of special needs children should contact the Camp Coordinator at email@example.com. We will make every possible effort to provide reasonable accommodations for the safety and enjoyment of all children. Staff members are predominantly trained educators; however, few have training specific to children with special needs.
Do I need to complete any additional paperwork?
After purchasing a camp registration, you must complete liability and release forms for each camp. The Leonardo reserves the right to cancel your registration if these forms are not submitted within two weeks from the day of registration. These forms can be printed, completed and mailed in OR completed online.
Cancellations made more than two weeks before the start of camp will receive a full refund. Cancellations made less than two weeks before the start of camp are not eligible for a refund. You may transfer to another camp session if the request is made at least two weeks before the start of both camps (subject to availability). Contact the Summer Camp Coordinator with your child’s name and camp information at firstname.lastname@example.org to request a cancellation or transfer.
What are the behavior expectations of children?
Camp staff will establish expected behavior guidelines at the beginning of each session. When a child does not observe the expected guidelines the summer day camp staff will try to refocus students on the activities. Should refocus attempts be unsuccessful staff will implement the some or all of the following steps.
- Verbal request from leaders
- Time out from activity
If anti-social behavior continues, parents will be notified of the situation and problem solving ideas will be discussed for reinforcement at home as well as during camp hours. Should behavior still be an issue after parental discussion & intervention efforts, we reserve the right to take the following steps.
- Suspension from camp for 2-5 days (no refund)
- Permanent suspension from camp (no refund)
Severity Clause: At the staff’s discretion, any consequence can by bypassed due to the severity of the behavior.
What is the typical camp size?
The maximum number of students in a camp is sixteen. Class size depends upon how many students register. The Leonardo reserves the right in advance to cancel any camp if too few children sign up.
What does my child need to wear to camp?
Although campers are not restricted in what they choose to wear clothing should not be a distraction to other campers or inhibit their active engagement in any of the daily activities. Offensive slogans are not permitted on any clothing items. Most camps will include active periods when campers should be wearing comfortable clothing. Some camps will include creative projects and could include messy materials such as paint or markers; we encourage campers to come in clothing that can get slightly messy.
What should my child not bring?
We ask that cell phones are off and stored away during camp hours.
What if my child is sick during camp?
Due to the contagious nature of some illnesses, children with the following symptoms should not attend camp. Please notify The Leonardo day camp program if your child contracts a contagious disease, such as whooping cough, German or regular measles. We will then notify families.
- Elevated temperature
- Diarrhea or vomiting
- Undiagnosed rash
- Sore or discharging eyes or ears, profuse nasal discharge.
- Diagnosed contagious diseases such as strep throat or chicken pox
Who can I contact during the day if I need to leave an emergency message concerning my child?
Call The Leonardo at 801-531-9800 and ask to speak to the Summer Camp Coordinator.
Drop-off and Pick-up
Drop-off and pick-up will be outdoors, at the corner of 200 E and 500 S. A museum staff member will be stationed there to assist with sign-in and sign-out. For safety reasons, parents and guardians (or those that they designate in advance) must sign for their child at drop off and pick up each day. You must provide a federal issue photo identification and be on the list of people to pick up your child every time they are picked up. Please be prepared to show photo ID to the staff member at the sign-in/sign-out booth.
Can my child leave camp on his or her own?
Children will be released only to parents/guardians or previously authorized adults, unless you have signed an authorization stating that your child is capable of leaving on their own. This option is only available for children 13 and up.
What if I am late to pick my child up?
Parents will be charged $1.00 for every minute a child is left at The Leonardo after the end of their pick up period (12:30 for morning camps, 4:30 for afternoon camps, 5:30 for those paying for Late Care). After 15 minutes, we will contact the child’s emergency contacts. If no one has arrived or contacted us within 45 minutes, a $50.00 late fee will be due immediately.
Lunch and Snacks
Campers enrolled in a morning and afternoon camp will eat lunch at the museum under supervision of a staff member. Parents and guardians are responsible for providing a lunch and snack for their child each day. Please make sure all food items do not need refrigeration or microwave heating.
What should my child bring for snack and/or lunch?
Campers will take a short break to eat a snack during each camp session. Any snack should be brought by the child each day. We ask that you avoid nut-based products or any items that frequently cause allergic reactions. Children attending both morning and afternoon sessions will have time to eat lunch between sessions. The Leonardo does not provide lunch.
